The Official Website of the New Mexico Mounted Patrol

The New Mexico Mounted Patrol (NMMP)is an all-volunteer state law enforcement agency staffed by Troopers who are certified and commissioned by the New Mexico Mounted Patrol. The New Mexico Mounted Patrol is not a division of the New Mexico State Police or the Department of Public Safety, but is an independent state agency that can be called upon to assist any law enforcement agency and serve anywhere in the state.

New Mexico Mounted Patrol Troopers may receive an additional Department of Public Safety commission card issued by the Chief of the New Mexico State Police for use when working with state agencies such as the New Mexico State Police, the Department of Game and Fish, and the State Parks.

The oversight of the New Mexico Mounted Patrol is through the New Mexico Mounted Patrol Board of Directors, and rules set forth by the Governor of New Mexico. Troopers receive 400 hours of training through a NMMP academy prior to being commissioned and certified by the New Mexico Mounted Patrol as Troopers.

By state statute, when on duty, NMMP Troopers assume the SAME duties, powers, and authority and accept the control of the agency for which they are working for. The New Mexico Mounted Patrol creation and authority to be a New Mexico Peace Officer is outlined in the Laws of the State of New Mexico and can be found in the Criminal and Traffic Law Manual, (Article 6, New Mexico Mounted Patrol, Sections 29-6-1 to 29-6-6.  Contrary to popular belief, the NMMP is not a "mounted" equestrian unit.
